Fencing Hall

The only building at Bunbu Gakkō with a half-hipped gable roof, this fencing hall is constructed with an elegant style of architecture that befits the entrance to the school.
The center room on the east side is the domain lord’s place of observation, whose floor is raised slightly higher than other rooms and uses different colors of plaster.
In the Edo period, they used bamboo swords and wooden swords for practice to learn kata forms. Protective gear from that time (early versions of what we use for kendo swordsmanship today) is on display at the Sanada Treasures Museum.
Along with spearsmanship and gunnery, swordsmanship was quite popular in the Matsushiro Domain. Records say that many visited from other domains for training.
