This 13.3-meter-high bell tower was built in 1801 in Matsushiro. The bell tolled every two hours to tell the time to the local residents living around the castle. Today, it tolls at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Oral tradition has it that Zozan Sakuma, a Matsushiro Clan retainer, used this bell tower to conduct an experiment related to telegraphic communication.
