Originally built in 1846, this gate was moved to its current location and restored to its original shape in 2000. Belonging to the residence of the Shirai Family who was a retainer of the Sanada Family, this large front gate contains several rooms which were used to accommodate family employees. Today, it has an information counter and a resting place for visitors where a cup of tea is offered by members of the Volunteer Society for Matsushiro Cultural Properties.
Hirokoji (Wide Street)
The aptly named Hirokoji is indeed a wide street. It is said to have been built intentionally wide to prevent fire from spreading to the central area serving as the government district of the domain and the castle.

Locals serving as Cultural Heritage Volunteers will greet you with hot tea and homemade pickles. The tea cups are local pottery called “Matsushiro Yaki.” They have a distinctive blue-green glaze. Serving pickles with tea is also a Nagano custom.
